Rockville, MD (March 5, 2025) — As millions of travelers prepare for Spring Break, rising travel costs and unpredictable disruptions make planning ahead more important than ever. Spring Break 2025 is shaping up to be one of the most expensive yet, with the average insured trip cost rising 26% to $8,306 this year. With higher stakes, new travel regulations like Real ID requirements and unpredictable weather, travelers have more to navigate than ever. The U.S. Travel Insurance Association (USTIA) is reminding travelers to consider the benefits of travel insurance when booking their Spring Break vacations.
“Spring Break is a peak travel period, meaning delays, cancellations and lost baggage are more likely,” said Robert Gallagher, President of USTIA. “Whether traveling domestically or internationally, travel insurance can help protect trip investments and provide critical assistance when disruptions occur.”
According to USTIA, travel insurance can help protect against common Spring Break disruptions, including:
- Trip cancellations and delays: If illness, weather or other covered events prevent travel, insurance can help recover nonrefundable expenses.
- Medical emergencies abroad: Many U.S. health insurance plans provide little to no coverage outside the country. Travel insurance can cover emergency medical treatment and medical evacuation if necessary.
- Lost or delayed baggage: Increased travel volumes can overwhelm baggage handling systems, raising the likelihood of luggage delays or mishandling. Travel insurance can provide reimbursement for essential items if baggage is delayed or lost.
“With travelers spending more on their Spring Break vacations than ever before, protecting that investment is critical,” said Thomas Stefaniak, CAE, Executive Director of USTIA. “Travel insurance helps ensure that if the unexpected happens, travelers have financial protection and support to handle disruptions without bearing the full burden of costs.”
USTIA encourages travelers to review their insurance options before booking their trip and to consider policies that provide comprehensive coverage, including trip interruption, medical emergencies and baggage protection.
